Daisies and roses

Daisy, give yourself away
Look up at the rain
A beautiful display
Of power and surrender
Giving us today
When she gives herself away....

Pain, give yourself a name
Call yourself contrition, avarice or blame
Giving isn't easy
Neither is the rain
When she gives herself away

Let it go, Daisy,
Let it go
Open up your fist
This fallen world
It doesn't hold your interest,
Doesn't hold your soul.
Daisy, let it go.........'Daisy', Switchfoot

I love that song. It's painful, but it's beautiful.

Why is it that roses smell the most beautiful when they die?
Why is it that (in most parts of the world) the trees and plants are the most gorgeous, brilliant colours when they are dying?

And maybe it's true that in dying to ourselves, in giving ourselves away, we are at our most magnificent.

Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain." - John 12:24 (1Corinthians 15:36, Romans 6:4)

But it depends on why you're dying. Everyone loses their life at some stage, but it aint always pretty. Jesus said, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matthew 16:24-35 (and Matthew 10:38-39; 16:25, Mark 8:35, Luke 9:24; 17:33, John 12:25).

But we do not die that we may have life, but that others can: "So then death is working in us, but life in you." 2Corinthians 4:12, John 15:13, 1John 3:16 - "By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren."

But we must be careful not to hold on to the people we die for, for that also is holding on to our carnal lives, and losing both. Jesus said, "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple." - Luke 14:26 (Compare with John 12:25 if you find this disturbing), Matthew 10:37; 19:29, Mark 10:29-30.

Sorry about all that. I'm going to my lecture now, I promise.
